This year, the town-centre of Leuven will be steeped in Christmas atmosphere for 10 days. At the start in 1987, the market was one of the pioneers in our country. One can enjoy nice tasting just as well as good shopping here. This is a rather unique combination within what is on offer internationally. As a matter of fact, Leuven has seen growing numbers of foreign visitors year after year.
Leuven’s Christmas Market has existed for 22 years this year. At the start in 1988 it was amongst the pioneers in Belgium. Everything ran as good as perfect from the first edition onwards. The location is ideal. Monseigneur Ladeuzesquare and Herbert Hooversquare are two nice, large squares in the historic town-centre.
The formula is just right as well. In Leuven one can enjoy nice tasting and good shopping for ten days. Tasting-stalls alternate with stands at which one can find the finest gifts, flower arrangements and decoration material. This combination is almost unique internationally and resulted in more than 350.000 visitors in 2007. So don’t be surprised to hear a mouthful of English or French being spoken…
The cherry on the cake is an extensive animation package, within which the annual godfather or –mother always occupies a central spot. Add to this the handicraft market and the animation on offer and you get a combination which is rather unique. Not just in Belgium but abroad as well.
Each year we put a different organisation in the spotlight. As a matter of fact you are particularly generous, enabling us to transfer a considerable amount year after year. For which we are very grateful, of course.
Make sure to drop by the stall near the balloon on Hooversquare.
Christmas is not just at the Market. Leuven is the ideal place for your Christmas shopping.
On Sunday, December 13th and 20 dec., by the way, shops in town are open.
Tip: certainly go and have a look at the life-size crib next to the town-hall.
In recent years, Leuven’s Christmas Market has increasingly seen group visits, also from abroad. Especially the Dutch and British seem to fall for the charm and the unique formula of Leuven. Quite a lot of British coach services insert Leuven as an intermediate stop on their way to Germany. The organisation puts in great efforts to make things just the way groups want them. For coach drivers, for instance, a special loop is in effect, easily guiding them into town .
Each day there is a special happening at the Christmas market of Leuven.
